Simon’s home in West Norwood, London is one of five loft conversions completed or underway on Durban Road by Simply Loft. The Edwardian homes on this street are fantastic for converting with a loft conversion and in this example, Simon decided to opt for a mansard loft conversion.
Mansard loft conversions are considered the most aesthetically pleasing loft conversions from the exterior as the sloping 72 degree angled roof is considered less box like than a standard dormer loft conversion. The second benefit is that a mansard loft conversion can also achieve as a high a roof line as possible as a dormer loft conversion.
In Simon’s loft conversion, he chose to make the main area into a beautiful and calm bedroom area, positioning two velux windows over the roof under which the bed is positioned. In the rest of the bedroom fitted wardrobes were added by our team for extra storage. A lovely shelving feature was also constructed near the window, which now houses pretty plants and books.
The ensuite bathroom in the loft conversion was also installed and fitted out at the same time by the Simply Loft team. The end result is a stylish monochrome finish with white tiles and black and white flooring. The dark feature wall near the eaves contrasts beautifully with the white tiles Simon chose.

We had planning permission and a start date ready to go for our mansard loft conversion when we were let down by the loft company we had originally chosen 2 weeks before we were meant to start.
Luckily having then checked out other conversions Simply Loft had done on our road already, we got them round to take on our plans and they started 3 weeks later. I believe the experience is down a lot to the project manager you are assigned. Having spoken to our neighbours who had already been through the loft conversion process we dug our heels in about which project manager and were assigned Edgaras, who was excellent and we felt in safe hands from the start.
You can’t expect to know exactly what is happening at every step of the way but for the most part I felt like I knew what was going on and how far was to go.
All the different people on site were polite and courteous. As with all builders though you really need to keep on top of them and keep checking the whole way.
However much you prepare for plastic sheeting on the carpets, you will almost certainly need to budget in redecoration from the ground up as well as re-carpeting. We had to have extra work done with repointing and rebuilding of parapet walls which caused delay and more cost, but Simply brought in the workers for the extras and were very black and white about the costs.
From the start of the scaffolding going up to finishing everything off, it was 3 months, but that delay was because of the extra brickwork that needed doing, which was the messiest part too. We stayed with friends for 2 weeks and went away for 2 weeks. So we were out of the flat for 4 of the worst weeks. Which is recommended. You can stay there the whole time, but if you can stay somewhere else then do.
The carpenter was excellent, and we commissioned him to do our wardrobes which we are very happy with, also the electrician supplied was ace. The only issues we had were with plumbing and a leak from under the shower… but they were quick to deal with the issue and covered the extra costs.
The guy who sorted all the snags was also brilliant and was kind enough to sort a couple of outstanding extras.
It is a full upheaval and feels like it goes on forever but we are very happy with our new bedroom and en-suite shower room.
