Brief: A rear dormer loft conversion to a beautiful home in Balham, South London. The loft conversion created one additional bedroom and a further bathroom for the home.
We worked closely with our client Schellion to design a loft conversion that included all the key features she wanted. Schellion had some definite ideas and we were able to offer a few design concepts and helped them visualise how the loft space would work.
The final design was a contemporary dormer style loft consisting of one new bedrooms — one with an ensuite. The rooms are beautifully light and airy thanks to the large skylights installed. Lighting within any kind of room is always an important element, as the way a room is lit as it can alter the entire atmosphere and feel. Multiple spotlights were also installed throughout the third floor by the Simply team.
Fittings such as radiators, doors and windows can render an entire wall unusable for storage. One solution is designing it to sit around such features. Here we have created clever storage solutions by fitting cupboards under the eaves completed with internal lighting. Wardrobes were fitted alongside a built in bookshelf to the bedroom. We went one step further and installed a large bookcase into the wall in the hallway to store their love of books and family photo albums. There was also enough space above the existing stairs to allow us to design a full open staircase. The project was a perfect example of how with a well-considered design and a compact space can look remarkably spacious.
