Window Dormer Loft Conversion Case Study in South East London
Brief: Window dormer loft conversion, Humber Road, Blackheath, London. Creating one new bedroom and bathroom to the top floor of this terraced, family home.
Simply Loft were delighted to be appointed to work on this unique loft conversion on Humber Road by our client. Window dormer loft conversions are often required on properties, which are in conservation areas so stricter requirements on designs are needed. Our design team set to work on ensuring an appropriate design was submitted that would pass planning permission. The idea of the loft conversion was to create a top floor hideaway for a child’s bedroom and extra shower room next door.
Once the designs were submitted to Greenwich council and approved, the Simply Loft construction team could then set to work bringing the designs to fruition. Scaffolding was erected all around the property and the first step was to construct the actual window dormer. As the team were not replacing the entire roof this stage could happen slightly faster. The dormer was cladded in tiles to match the existing tiles of the roof in order to blend in as much as possible.
When the dormer window was completed to the loft conversion and made watertight, then all the internal work could be carried out. This included creating a new floor for the loft conversion and then adding all the stud wall partitions for the bedroom and bathroom. The plumbing and electric teams could then come in to carry out all the first fix work as well as the new staircase being installed. Once the plastering work was carried out, all the final more aesthetic stages could be carried out, such as tiling and fitting out the new shower room.
The final look was fantastic. In the shower room our client and design team decided to house the shower in the window dormer loft section of the conversion in order to achieve maximum head height. The rest of the shower room was tiled in stunning dark grey brick tiles for a dramatic finish. In the bedroom, full use of all the eaves was made including positioning and fitting a child’s bed under the window for dreaming under the stars. A lovely desk area was also slotted into the opposite end for play and homework time.
