Pod Loft Conversion, Belmont Road, Croydon, South London

Brief: Pod or l-section only loft conversion, to a mid-terrace property, plus stripping out existing loft bathroom, creating new bathroom and fitting two new Velux windows in an existing rear dormer loft conversion.

This loft conversion pod was completed for our clients living in a middle terrace house in Croydon, South London. Pod loft conversions are sometimes also known as l-section only loft conversions.  They are typically built of the outrigger section of a home and attached to an existing loft conversion for maximum space! Our Simply Loft clients dreamed of updating and extending their existing loft conversion, to make it suit their lifestyle more than the existing one did. This loft conversion pod was slightly different to the usual loft conversions we build, however it has transformed the existing loft conversion considerably.

The first step in our client’s journey with Simply Loft, was for our surveyor to learn what needed to be done to this existing build for it to suit the clients new brief and identify which loft conversion would be most suitable. The Simply Loft team identified that their existing loft conversion would need to be re-roofed, and a pod dormer loft conversion would be the most suitable option for adding extra space.

A pod loft conversion is essentially an extra space of around 3m x 3-3.5m, built out over the back half of a house, above the first floor. The space can be linked to an existing loft conversion, hence the term loft pod, or it can be developed as a stand-alone pod above an L-shaped first floor. You will have needed to convert your loft first before you can fully utilise a loft pod. Many clients choose to do both a loft conversion and the loft pod in one go, but for this project, because there was already an existing loft conversion already on the property, an additional build by the Simply Loft team was not necessary. The loft pod on this case study was used to create a stunning dressing room complete with bespoke joinery.  The dressing room was the perfect addition to the existing main loft conversion, making the top floor of this property a luxurious master suite.

While the bedroom was already there, the clients dreamed of transforming this master bedroom into a lighter space, this was possible during the re-roofing process, the contracted builders were able to make this dream reality by adding two large side by side Velux windows in the eaves of the loft conversion, which are above the bed in the bedroom, resulting in a dreamy bedroom which is light, airy and spacious.
