The Project Brief
The owners of this first-floor flat on Harlescott Road in Southwark wanted to make significantly better use of the property’s existing roof space. The objective was to turn the flat into a much larger home without changing its location, creating two additional bedrooms and a new bathroom.
As the property forms part of a traditional mid-terrace house, making the most of the available footprint was key. The design also needed to provide comfortable headroom, plenty of natural light and a staircase that felt integrated with the existing property.
Our Approach / The Design Solution
A rear and L-shape dormer loft conversion offered an effective way to maximise the available space. Extending across the main roof and rear outrigger created considerably more usable floor area than a simpler roof conversion would have provided.
The new loft floor was arranged around two bedrooms and a shared bathroom. Large windows provide impressive views across the surrounding South East London rooftops, while rooflights bring additional daylight into the front-facing areas and landing.
The result is a practical new storey that feels connected to the original flat rather than simply added above it.
The Conversion — Room by Room
The New Bedrooms
The conversion created two well-proportioned bedrooms. The larger bedroom benefits from expansive glazing on two sides, creating a particularly bright space with far-reaching views. Built-in wardrobes provide generous storage without compromising floor area.
The second bedroom makes clever use of the sloping roof, with two large rooflights positioned above the bed. There is also sufficient space for a dedicated desk and home-working area.
The New Bathroom
The loft bathroom combines traditional detailing with clever use of the eaves. Neutral square wall tiles are paired with a striking monochrome chequerboard floor, chrome fittings and sage-green panelling. A large rooflight above the bathroom brings in abundant daylight, while concealed eaves storage makes use of otherwise awkward space.
The Staircase and Landing
The staircase is a standout feature of this Southwark loft conversion. Traditional dark-painted balustrades contrast with light walls and carpeting, while an exposed brick wall retains some of the original character of the property. A large overhead rooflight floods the stairwell and landing with natural light.
