Many people choose to have a loft conversion in their home because they want to make the most of their space. They may want to turn it into a hobby space, a home cinema, a playroom or perhaps just an extra bedroom. The great thing about loft conversions is that you can make the space whatever you want it to be without too much hassle and without it costing you the Earth.

Whilst it is easy enough to put in place plans for a loft conversion (especially if you use the services of an expert in converting lofts), there are still lots of things that you need to think about, particularly before you start to get to work.

Here are some of the main pre-considerations to keep in mind before you have a loft conversion.

Is your structure strong enough?

Converting your loft will add space to your home, but, as well as this, it is also going to add extra weight. This might only be a small amount (depending on what you choose to have in your conversion), but it will increase the amount of importance placed on the structure of your home. You need to make sure that it will withstand this additional weight (well, an expert will need to think about this), and if there is any doubt, this could be an extra part of your conversion to be paying out for.

Loft Conversion Head height

You need to make sure that your loft conversion will be fit for purpose, which means checking out whether you have the head height you need. Some lofts will not be tall enough, which can cause you some issues as you work through the project. Not just this, but you will find that building regulations specify that your loft has at least 180cm between the floor and the ceiling and at best around the 230cm mark.

Look at Loft Conversion Building Regulations

Talking of building regulations, this will be a big part of your plans for your loft. Loft conversions are usually considered a smaller level of home improvement, which means that building regulations and planning permissions are not always applicable. That said, you should still think about checking whether or not your plans will meet the set regulations. That way, you can be sure that it will be within the law and that you won’t have any plans in the future.

Do you have enough natural light?

One final consideration for your loft conversion is whether or not you have enough light in the space. Natural light is vital for any part of your home, but it can be hard to figure out how best to bring light into your loft. One of the most popular ways to do this is to add in skylights; these can be a great way to add in light but still ensure that your loft space is kept private too.

Whilst there are plenty of things to think about before you plan a loft conversion, this doesn’t mean that you should give up on the idea altogether. It just means that you need to give it careful thought and make sure that it looks the way that you want it to and that it functions well and is safe for you and your family.
