Brief: Rear dormer loft conversion in Surrey to an end terrace house, creating one new bedroom and one new bathroom.

Our client, based in Surrey, wanted a new bedroom ensuite in their loft and our surveyors identified that a rear dormer would be the best option for the type of loft conversation desired. With clever use of headspace, the build utilises the space to its maximum potential. This is especially dominant within the bathroom. A rear dormer is a very popular type of loft conversion. Not only does it provide good head height, but it also has the ability to add up to 50 cubic meters of extra space onto the property.

This loft ensuite bathroom captures the natural sunlight with white windows placed on the dormer, filtering and flooding as much light and warmth as possible. The already white room allows for the client’s decals to pop, as they can add bursts of colour to the bathroom to really accentuate uniqueness and personal design. However, on the contrary, white promotes cleanliness which is ideal for a bathroom space while also allowing room for adaptability if the client’s decorative desires should change.

With the bathroom built at the front of the house, the clever design of having the bath built under the eaves means that there is less dead space and the space instead, can be utilised to its maximum potential. Despite the minimalism of the loft conversion space, there is still lots of storage space within the closet by the bath, built into the wall.

The bedroom follows a similar style to the bathroom, the white walls really allowing the green feature wall behind the bed to pop, yet again adding a splash of individuality to the build. The windows flood the light in, while the skylights brighten the place with simplicity – without the need for a hanging light. Despite the minimalism of the bedroom, there is still lots of storage space within the white closet and the white, rustic bed stand. The carpet ties in with the colour of the curtains, allowing the bedroom colours to flow in harmony with each other, making for a very charming room.

The client chose to have four casement windows instead of a singular, long window. This allows them to have more control over their own privacy, especially alongside the fitted curtains, while also having the option to control the temperature of the room depending on the weather outside. The bed positioning also allows the sunlight to flood onto it, warming the bed on cooler days which again adds to the control of the room.

The simplistic colour scheme of white and green means the room is easily adaptable as trends and tastes change. The green feature wall is a clever choice as it is not only pleasing to the eye, but green is also a complementary colour of white. The green is aesthetically pleasing while also connoting health, freshness and serenity alongside positive feelings of tranquillity and relaxation which is perfect for a bedroom space.
